Why Was My Google Ads Account Suspended? 6 Real Reasons (And What to Do)

Your Google Ads account just got suspended.

You opened your dashboard this morning expecting to see campaigns running, and instead you found a red banner: “Your account has been suspended.”

No warning. No explanation that makes sense. Just a notice — and your ads have stopped completely.

If this is you right now, you are not alone. Google suspends thousands of accounts every week, and a significant portion of those suspensions catch businesses completely off guard. Some are genuine policy violations. Many are automated flags that had nothing to do with deliberate wrongdoing.

In this post I am going to explain the 6 real reasons Google suspends accounts — not the vague policy language Google uses, but what actually triggers these suspensions in practice — and exactly what your next steps should be.

Why Google suspends accounts: how the system actually works

Before getting into specific reasons, it helps to understand something about how Google’s enforcement actually operates.

Google uses a combination of automated systems and manual reviewers to monitor advertisers. The automated systems scan continuously — your website, your account history, your payment profile, your business identity, and how all of these things connect to each other.

When the system detects what it considers a policy signal, it can trigger a suspension automatically, often without a human reviewer ever looking at your specific account. This is why many suspensions feel random or unfair — because in some cases, they genuinely are triggered by automated pattern-matching rather than a deliberate decision about your business.

Understanding this matters because it changes how you approach recovery. You are not arguing with a human who made a judgement call about your business. You are submitting evidence to a system that needs to see specific signals before it will reverse the flag.

Now, the 6 real reasons.

Reason 1: Circumventing Systems suspension

This is one of Google’s most serious suspension categories and one of the most common causes of full account shutdowns.

A Circumventing Systems suspension means Google’s automated system has flagged your account as attempting to bypass its advertising policies or enforcement mechanisms. In practice this can be triggered by:

  • Creating a second Google Ads account while one is already suspended (even accidentally)
  • Using redirect chains or cloaking on your landing pages
  • Inconsistent business information across your website, Google Ads account, and payment profile
  • A history of policy violations on previous accounts associated with your email, phone, or payment method
  • Website behaviour that the automated system reads as designed to conceal the true nature of the advertised content

The reason this suspension is particularly difficult is that Google treats it as a high-trust violation. Even if your actual intent was innocent — for example, you created a second account because you didn’t realise the first was suspended — the system treats the pattern the same way.

If your suspension reason shows “Circumventing Systems,” read our detailed Circumventing Systems recovery guide before submitting any appeal. Submitting without understanding the root cause is the number one reason appeals fail.

Reason 2: Unacceptable Business Practices

This is the most common suspension type for small and medium businesses in India and internationally.

Unacceptable Business Practices covers a wide range of situations where Google believes the advertiser is not operating a legitimate, transparent business. Common real-world triggers include:

  • Franchise businesses advertising without explicit written authorisation from the parent brand — Google sees an entity spending money on a brand name they appear not to own
  • Financial and tax services using landing pages that reference government forms, official-looking seals, or language that implies government affiliation
  • Tourism and travel operators without verifiable licensing documents on file
  • Businesses with inconsistent NAP (name, address, phone) across the website, Google account, and other online listings
  • Landing pages with missing trust elements — no privacy policy, no terms of service, no clear contact information, no physical address

The frustrating reality of UBP suspensions is that many are triggered not because your business is doing anything wrong, but because your website does not communicate enough evidence of legitimacy to satisfy Google’s automated review criteria.

See our Unacceptable Business Practices recovery guide for the specific documentation and website changes needed to resolve this type of suspension.

Reason 3: Payment and billing issues

A payment-related suspension is different from the policy suspensions above — it is generally easier to resolve, but it can still shut your account down completely.

Payment suspensions are triggered by:

  • A declined or expired payment method
  • A billing address that does not match your payment card records
  • Disputed or charged-back transactions on your account
  • An account that accrued unpaid balances across a billing cycle

The key distinction here: if your suspension reason mentions billing or payment directly, this is usually resolvable by fixing the payment method and clearing any outstanding balance. However, if payment issues have been left unresolved for extended periods or if there have been chargebacks, this can escalate to a policy-level suspension that requires a formal appeal.

Reason 4: New account suspended immediately

This one confuses people the most, because it happens before you have even spent a single rupee on ads.

A new Google Ads account gets suspended immediately when:

  • The email address used to create the account has a history with previously suspended accounts
  • The payment method (credit card, bank account) has been associated with a previously suspended account
  • The website URL has been previously flagged by Google’s systems
  • The business phone number or address matches a previously suspended advertiser profile
  • The IP address or device used to create the account has a pattern Google’s system flags

In other words, Google is not only looking at your new account — it is looking at everything connected to you. If anything in that network of signals has a prior suspension history, the new account can be flagged before it ever serves a single ad.

If this has happened to you, attempting to create another new account is almost certainly going to make the situation worse. This is one of the situations where getting a proper assessment before taking any action is genuinely important.

Reason 5: Misrepresentation

Misrepresentation suspensions cover a specific set of advertiser behaviours that Google treats as deliberate deception of users. Common triggers include:

  • Promoting a product or service that is materially different from what is delivered
  • Using a website domain or business name that implies official or government affiliation when none exists — for example, domain names containing words like “official,” “government,” “certified,” or abbreviations of regulatory body names
  • Advertising testimonials or results that cannot be substantiated
  • Landing pages that collect user information without a clear disclosure of how it will be used

For construction, certification, and compliance businesses in particular, this is a common trap — a domain name or page title that was chosen to sound credible can read as deliberately misleading to Google’s policy system.

Reason 6: Advertiser Identity Verification failure

Google has been rolling out Advertiser Verification requirements globally since 2021, and accounts that fail or do not complete verification are suspended.

Advertiser Verification requires you to confirm:

  • Your legal name or business name
  • Your country of operation
  • That the ads you run comply with local laws

Failure to complete verification within the deadline Google gives you results in an automatic suspension. This is one of the most straightforward suspensions to resolve — once you complete the verification process correctly — but many businesses miss the deadline because the notification goes to a Gmail inbox that is not actively monitored.

What to do right now

Regardless of which suspension type applies to you, there are four things that matter immediately:

1. Do not create a new account. This is the most common mistake people make, and it almost always makes the situation significantly worse by adding a Multiple Account flag on top of the original suspension.

2. Read the suspension notice carefully. The reason shown in your Google Ads account is your starting point. It tells you which of the above categories applies and therefore what evidence and changes will be needed for a successful appeal.

3. Fix the root cause before appealing. Google’s appeal form asks you to confirm that you have addressed the issue. Submitting an appeal before making the necessary changes to your website, account, or documentation is almost always rejected.

4. Get a proper assessment if you are unsure. If the suspension reason is unclear, or if you have already submitted one or more failed appeals, attempting further appeals without understanding the actual root cause has a very low success rate. Each rejected appeal reduces your chances of reinstatement.
